Journal Entry: Getting through the winter

As bulbs are bravely sending leaves up above the soil, we love noticing the subtleties that are evolving above ground as we move through the end of the season. We felt that it is time to slowly emerge from hibernation, reconnect and share the first whisper of our Spring time events and workshops with you.

I’ve always loved the twisted silhouettes of trees this time of year. A visual reminder of Winter’s restorative beauty. Stripped down bare, they focus their energy on the roots that ground and connect them.

Following suit, we decided to take the turn of Winter to delve deeper into the roots of Ubuntu Food. Nurturing relationships with our community of suppliers, forging new partnership connections and developing our offering for the upcoming Spring.

We retreated back to our Norfolk home on the coast where our family table welcomed our worries, and soothed our stresses as we put the world to rights over Mamma Potgieter’s soul food and bottle of red. We ventured North in pursuit of vast landscapes and hiking trails, freeing our minds of the noise and expectation of life in the city.

Time was needed for me to develop how Ubuntu Food approaches the fundamental problems that come from being part of an industry built on a broken system. Fuelled by out dated practices, unrealistic expectations and false narratives; the detached and unsustainable realities of so many hospitality businesses have been normalised to the detriment of our land and its people.

It is in our power to change that.

We are a creative collective, who choose to do things differently. Curating engaging experiences around food and fire that foster connection and community. Working with people and places who wish to restore balance across the system.

Buying a ticket to one of our Ubuntu Food events or workshops this Spring, celebrates this movement towards a resilient future. We have so much to share with you.
